Why is living a simple life so hard to achieve? Think about it? Technology is supposed to make life simpler, right!?! Cell phones, fax machines, and the internet all make it possible to work from home. Dish washers, washing machines, and vaccums make it easier to get chores done in less time. So why is it that we're more stressed and feeling less connected to our friends and family than ever before?
Technology, though meant to make life easier, has unintentionally created additional pressure for all of us. Don't get me wrong modern technology does have significant benefits however unless me manage our own expectations we will continue to live a life of constant stress and pressure.
Here are my tips for living a simpler, and hopefully, less stressful, life by managing our expectations regarding technology.
1. Turn off your cell phone at the same time each day (i.e., after 8pm) and leave it downstairs (or out of the bedroom).
2. Set aside one day a week for each of your chores (preferably not the same day) and stick to the schedule.
3. Spend at least 30 minutes a day doing something simple (i,e., play cards or a boardgame, read a book or magazine, visit a friend).
If you're struggling to let go of technology and want to live a more simple life, a counsellor at hp counselling can help you define what that means for you. What do you have to lose?
