Is uncertainty crippling your finances?

The military life is uncertain to say the least and whether you married into the military or have a spouse or family member who joined well into your life together, the uncertainty can lead to distress, conflict, and emotional upheaval.

One of the greatest stressors for military families is financial. Frequent relocations, inadequate employment opportunities, and loss of income make life very challenging, especially right after a move.

Many military families have told me that there came a point where they discovered that being a dual income family was far more stressful, especially during annual posting season, than relying solely on their spouse’s military income. An interesting observation for sure and as a dual income military family, I wanted to know more.

Here is what I discovered.

  1. While dual income military families seem to have less financial stress when they are settled into a posting location, they tend to experience more financial stress during and after the move to a new location.

  2. Single income military families seem to experience a smoother transition with no little or no required change (depending on posting location) to their monthly spending habits.

  3. Both types of military families find changes to their income (i.e., loss of field pay, post-living differential) as a result of a postings very stressful and have difficulty adjusting their spending habits accordingly.

So, what can you do? When a posting message arrives it is a great time to re-evaluate your financial situation and create a new budget to reflect changes to your income. By doing this, you are more likely to see how much of a difference you loss of income will make and you can plan accordingly. Fortunately,
