You've booked an appointment, now what?

Many people struggle to book that first appointment because they don't know what to expect once they do. That's why I'm going to share with you exactly what you can expect once you've booked your first appointment with us.

Confirmation Email

The first thing you'll receive after you schedule your first session, whether it's online or during your free consultation, is a confirmation email. In addition to reminding you of your appointment date and time, this email provides you will important information about our location, payment and extended health benefits. You'll also find links to our consent and intake forms, and our social media policy. Completing these forms before your appointment is a great way to ensure that you have ample time to discuss your needs with your therapist in that first session.

Appointment Day

When you arrive at our office, you are invited to have a seat in our cozy waiting area where you can read a magazine or just listen to the radio while you scroll through your phone or take a breather. It's not uncommon for clients to describe feeling anxious while they wait. This is completely normal. Taking a few deep breathes and reminding yourself that this is a safe place can help you manage any anxiety you feel.

During your Appointment

When it time for your scheduled session, your therapist will come out to the waiting area, introduce themselves, and invite you into our office. We often hear from our clients that our office is an inviting and comfortable space that helps them feel safe and warm.

Your therapist will collect your forms, if you haven't already sent them by email, and invite you to take a seat. Once you are comfortable, she'll ask you if you have any questions about the forms and explain the purpose of the first session. If you have any questions, now or at any time during your session, we hope that you will feel comfortable to ask. There are no silly or unnecessary questions.

The first session is an opportunity for you and your therapist to get to know one another. Your therapist will review the intake form, if she has not already done so, and may ask you some additional questions. If you are nervous, that's okay. We will go at a perfect pace for you.

Once the intake form has been reviewed and additional information gathered, your therapist may ask you to tell her a little more about why you are seeking counselling. This is your time to share whatever you feel is relevant to you at the time. It's not uncommon for clients to say that they don't know where to start. Where you start is completely up to you. You don't have to worry about missing something because if it's important it will come up again in future sessions. Your therapist will also ask questions during this time.

At the end of the first session, your therapist will be interested to know how you felt throughout the session. It is important that you feel that this is a safe, nonjudgmental environment. The relationship between client and therapist is a strong predictor of outcomes so we want to make sure that you feel like this is a good fit for you. Your therapist will be open to hear what worked well for you and what didn't so that she can make changes in future sessions.

If you are ready to scheduled another session your therapist will be happy to do so right there in session. She will ask you how frequent you would like to attend counselling and may offer her suggestions. If you need to check your schedule and get back to us, that's okay. You can schedule your next session online, by phone, or by email.

The last thing you therapist will do before you leave your session is collect payment. Your therapist will talk to you about when you can expect to receive your receipt and can answer any questions you have at this time.

We hope that your first counselling session with us will be a positive one and welcome feedback on how we can make your visit even better.
