Saying Goodbye

Posting season is upon us and this year it’s my turn to move. It really doesn’t matter whose turn it is. Saying goodbye whether you are the one staying behind or leaving is always hard. At least it is for me.

Today is my last day of work, the kids last day of school, and while we are all excited to begin our adventures in Ottawa, we are all feeling a little glum and anxious about this transition.

Why is saying goodbye so hard? We crave human interaction and the comfort that comes from being around people we love and trust. When we say goodbye, we lose the connections that we depend on and fear that we won’t find what we need in the new locale. We fear isolation and loneliness.

It is normal to have mixed feelings during transition. Today, I feel excited for the opportunities that await me, sad because I am leaving friends that mean the world to me and anxious about a whole lot of things that I am struggling to put into words.

Here are three things that I will do (and you can too) to cope with the transition:

  1. Talk to my friends and family about how I am feeling. Share memories and plan to get together again soon.

  2. Reflect. I am big on this one. I will take some time to reflect on the good, the bad, and the ugly and allow myself to feel whatever it is that I feel about each of the experiences.

  3. Give myself time. Time to adjust to Ottawa, make new friends and create new experiences and opportunities.

Saying goodbye is hard but great things lie ahead if we just give them a chance.
