Four Habits of Emotionally Healthy People

March 27, 2017

Emotional health is "a positive state of wellbeing, which enables an individual to be able to function in society and meet the demands of everyday life." (Mental Health Foundation). When a person is emotionally healthy, their mood and outlook on life are positive. Here are four habits of emotionally healthy people:

The first two habits are internal factors that are completely within control. They are: self-love and self-reflection.

Self-love is one of the most important factors, yet it is also the most difficult for some. When you show yourself love you are able to forgive yourself for mistakes and understand that you’re doing the best that you can. Loving yourself allows you to know your worth and how you deserve to be treated, which, in turn, improves your relationships with other people.

Daily self-reflection is a powerful tool that can help you grow and improve your life in many ways. The ability to reflect on your day and the emotions you experience will give you the power to embrace the good, as well as the bad. It will also help you to learn from mistakes made, making you stronger because of them.

The third and fourth habits are external factors that contribute to both your mental and physical health and well-being. They are: social interaction and acts of service.

Social interaction is an important factor in the prevention of depression and anxiety. When you are able to share with another person your emotions and life's challenges you experience less stress and improved self-confidence and this can also help improve the bodies immune system and ability to fight disease. When you feel socially supported you improve both your physical and mental health.

Acts of service are not only great for the community, they can have a significant effect on your emotional health. No matter how grand or how small your gesture may be, doing something for someone else, is likely to improve your mood and overall health. Doing something that you enjoy is even more beneficial.

Incorporating these four habits into your daily life will not only help to improve your mood and overall outlook on life, it will help to create an emotionally healthy state of mind.
