5 Ways to Incorporate More Positivity and Meaning in Your Life

When anxiety and depression are a part of your life, you can start to become overwhelmed by negativity. You may start to discount any good things that happen to you or overgeneralize based on one bad outcome. That way that you think about yourself, others and the world can have a significant impact on how you feel and it can become really hard to get up and do the things that previously brought you a lot of joy. In addition to a doctor or counselor's support, here are five ways to incorporate more positivity and meaning into your life:

 

1. Positive Mantras

Positive mantras are a good way to start rewiring your brain to think more positively about yourself and your situation. Here are a few examples that you can try out. You can choose to repeat them to yourself in your head or even say them out loud to yourself or in front of a mirror. Posting them around your house is also a fun idea.

 

  • I am worthy of happiness and fulfillment

  • I am full of energy and purpose

  • The Universe is working to give me everything that I need

  • My friends and family love and appreciate me

2. Mindfulness

Learning to be mindful and present throughout the day is another way to start to recognize and become aware of negative thoughts and feelings. A few ways to be more mindful include:

 

  • Sitting in meditation and focusing on the breath and physical sensations

  • Enjoying a meal distraction-free. Instead of watching tv, eat slowly and focus on the tastes and textures of your food

  • Write down the top three things you want to accomplish each day, or journal about your intentions, thoughts, and feelings

3. Exercise

Exercise is a great way to start to bring positivity into your life because it gets your blood flowing, increases your energy, and releases feel-good chemicals in the brain. A few ways that you can incorporate exercise into your day are:

 

  • Going for a walk around the block or in nature

  • Starting a yoga practice or finding some stretches that make you feel good

  • Taking up another physical activity like a sport, running, or biking

4. Surround Yourself with Positive People

If everyone you hang out with has a negative outlook on life, never wants to do anything, and is constantly complaining, it can be hard to start to change and build better habits for yourself. Try to spend time with positive people who enrich your life and inspire you to get out and do more.

 

5. Find Hobbies and Activities that You Enjoy

When depression and anxiety are a part of your life, it is possible to lose interest in the things that you used to love. It may take some time before you are ready to start doing more again, but it can help to be open to new experiences.

 

Start slowly by exploring old and new interests and find things that spark your inner joy. Once you find something that lights you up, try to work it into your daily or weekly routine.
